The title of this piece reflects a set of values in my eyes that I believe to have been lost beneath a rising tide. My current take on this greed.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eBefore I continue, I will state that I do not believe myself to be different from anyone in this regard. I too could be more generous with my money. I could forsake eating out and all forms of entertainment. I could live on the bare essentials. I could pledge my life wholly to a noble cause.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI find it increasingly common for individuals to cast aside their family over past hurts. There is no need to justify yoursell if this raises your ire. I myself have done it. I understand when it is neccessary. Particularly when they hold you back, undermine your efforts, or have done things to you that make many people run at the mention of them, be it phyysically or emotionally.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI've found it even more common for us to disengage from our communities. Most people don't know their neighbors. I live in a small apartment building as of this writing. I know the one on my left because we were friends prior to him moving in. I have exchanged no more than 30 words with the one on my right despite having lived here for two and a half years.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI work a mostly solitary job, though I would love to build this into something where I can have a few people working with me who are paid well.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have taken it upon myself to get involved locally in helping to feed the every growing number of people on long island that are having a hard time financially feeding themselves. In the three years I've been with Community Solidarity, I have made many friends, offered and given rides, and found myself included in a community. Something that is still somewhat foreign to me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI look at this piece (which I have worn every day since I made it), and it reminds me of something ancient. Something that has been around since long before anyone still alive walked the earth. It reminds me of the worth of communal values. Of giving freely what we can and not seeking to add to a treasure hoard, if we're lucky enough to have one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI have met so many people on Long Island who's goal seemed to be to live for themselves (maybe even their small family). Who just wanted more and more. Who tried to squeeze everything out of whatever resource they were exploiting. And then I've met many more while volunteering who freely offer so much of their time, money, and skills. Despite having so little.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIf I had to liken a value to a ruler, community would be king.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd I fear it is sinking further and further beneath the tides.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI can't control another. I can't force anyone to be more communally minded.  I'm on the record numerous times stating how I would never wish to do so.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAnd so I find myself carrying the crown that fits around my finger.
